Notes of Proceedings at Heeting of the Committee to consider a
Scheme of Compulsory Military Training held at the
Council Chamber on the 13th. of June, 1910.
Present:-
His Excellency the Officer Administering the Govern-
-ment and all members except Major Hart-Synnot,
who by inadvertence was not summoned.
The Officer Administering the Government
read the note of proceedings of the Meeting of the Sub-Committee
held on the 6th. of June, and briefly explained the modified
scheme of compulsory training which had been considered by the Sub-Committee and against the adoption of which a large majority
of the Un-Official Members of the Committee had voted.
Mr. Shewan spoke in favour of the modified
scheme. He said he thought the difficulties, emphasized by
those who voted against it, of sparing employees from the Docks and Sugar Refineries were exaggerated. He did not find diffi-
-culty in letting skilled employees at the Cement Works,
Alv managed by the Firm, have a day's holiday when they wanted it.
But if the difficulty was a real one it
could *** be met by increasing the Staff. This would entail a
sacrifice which the Firms concerned and all large employers of
labour ought to be willing to bear in the interest of the object
in view.
Mr. Keswick asked how shareholders would
view such action on the part of those responsible for the manage –
-ment of the industries referred to.
